When I was a kid my Old Man told me, “If you want a rusty gun, use WD 40.” He used Hoppe’s #9 solvent, and 3inOne oil to lube and protect his guns. If nothing else is available WD 40 can be used as a solvent, and it will displace water. But it is a poor protectant and too thin for use as a lubricant. Instead, you can use motor oil, white grease or petroleum jelly. In a pinch, Neosporin from your First Aid kit will work. =BCE56=

This. WD40 also attracts dirt like a mother fucker, same with non-synthetic motor oil.

See, my experience is that WD40 is a good long term protectant, and very, very short term lubricant.  But if you’re not about to fire an open bolt weapon, or pack your rifle into a safe for two years, it’s utterly useless.
