in case no one mentioned it, starboard/port make no sense until you’re actually on a ship, at which point they immediately make complete sense.

starboard isn’t “your” right, it’s the ship’s right.
so you don’t have to say “something is off to the right side of the ship”, you can simply say that it’s starboard.

port is the side of the ship upon which officers traditionally congregated to drink port after dishing out the day’s lashings
the other side is called starboard because during said lashings sailors would be lined up against a board and look up at/curse the stars while being lashed
